American Indian Movement (AIM) and Transform Columbus Day (TCD) Call Press Conference To Announce Legal Defense on Columbus Day Charges
DENVER 88 ANNOUNCE PLANS FOR VIGOROUS, PRINCIPLED LEGAL DEFENSE
AIM/TCD TO EXPOSE PRACTICES OF
POLICE VIOLENCE
On WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER, 10, 2007, at 11 am, at FOUR WINDS AMERICAN INDIAN CENTER (5th Avenue at Bannock) AIM and TCD will hold a press conference to announce the legal defense strategy for the charges leveled at the Columbus Day protest on Saturday, October 6, 2007.
Among other issues to be discussed will be plans to:
• Put Columbus, the City of Denver, and the Columbus Parade on trial;
• Defenders will once again demand jury trials, and will utilize every defense available to them;
• Challenge the constitutionality of the arrests and the prosecution of defenders;
• Bring Mayor John Hickenlooper, his staff, and the City of Denver to account for targeted and discriminatory arrest and prosecution of defenders;
The press conference will also discuss:
• Plans by AIM leader Russell Means to bring a civil lawsuit against the City of Denver for various acts of torture.
• Plans by other defenders, including a wheelchair-bound elder, a sightless man, and others who were brutalized by the Denver Police and Sheriffs Departments.
• Additional civil complaints for racist and violent treatment at the hands of Denver authorities.
